Leading the Fight for Fair Votes

Published on Sunday 2nd January 2011 by Jon Hubbard
The expenses scandal showed the innate corruption of the British political system. The reform acts of the 1800's got rid of the rotten boroughs but the first past the post system and the safe seat system it generates has preserved a culture of contempt amongst parliamentarians for their electorate.
A referendum on May 5th will give us all the chance to vote for a fairer voting system, and Wiltshire Liberal Democrats are leading the campaign in the county for a positive result.
Many local MPs will resist the change and urge you to vote against reform. That's because they like the current cosy system that protects their 'jobs for life'. But a Yes vote in May will change that. A Yes vote will mean that every MP will have to win the support of more than half the voters in their area.
No more will elections be decided by a few people in marginal seats. The Alternative Vote system will mean that your vote will count no matter where you live. Changing our outdated voting system will give power back to the people. There will be no more wasted votes.
