Building a fairer Britain

Selwood could go charitable

8.57.00am GMT Thu 17th Dec 2009

Trowbridge-based Selwood Housing Society are considering changing their status from a Not For Profit Organisation to being a charity. The benefit of doing that is simple - they wouldn't have to pay corporation tax on operating surpluses. The only disadvantage would be that they wouldn't be able to get involved in commercial activity such as selling property on the private market. Selwood say they don't plan on getting into such areas of business, and if they ever did they could set up a subsidiary company.

Selwood are currently consulting with their tenants on the idea.
