Liberal Democrats choose new leader in Wiltshire

5.18.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Tue 23rd Jun 2009

The newly elected Liberal Democrat group on Wiltshire Council have elected Holt and Staverton Councillor Trevor Carbin as their leader.

Speaking following his election, Trevor Carbin said, "I've promised Tory leader Jane Scott that the Liberal Democrats will provide constructive opposition on the new Wiltshire Council. We need to keep reminding the county hall elite that people are suffering because of the current recession. Council Tax is painfully high and should not be increased further. Our roads are deteriorating and must be improved. The old district councils had a good record in promoting economic development and this must be continued. Wiltshire is not immune from the effects of climate change and it is vital that we keep promoting the green agenda."
