Elect the Lords Campaign Launches11.40.00am GMT Tue 8th Feb 2005
Duncan Hames is a founder member of the Elect the Lords campaign. Local Lib Dem spokesman Cllr Duncan Hames is one of the founding supporters of the new Elect the Lords Campaign, which launches today (8 February) in the Guardian newspaper. Commenting on the launch of the campaign, Duncan said: "The Labour Party has defrauded our constitution with its half-baked 'reforms' to the House of Lords. Instead of making our Parliament more democratic, it has created a House of patronage which only serves to make it easier for Tony Blair to make sheep of his MPs and replace critics with cheer-leaders. "When the House of Lords does do its job and forces the government to look again at controversial legislation the government ignores it with the claim that it is not elected. The second chamber is an important defence of our constitution and our liberties. It should be strengthened by an elected mandate and Tony's cronies should be replaced with the people's choice."
