Budget Proposals - February 2011
A Healthy Wiltshire for All
-
Published on Sunday 20th February 2011
Wiltshire Council talks the talk about improving fitness levels across the county and making Wiltshire one of the country’s healthiest councils, but it rarely actually does anything to encourage greater take-up of activities.
The Liberal Democrats propose to re-introduce the free swimming scheme previously funded by central government, making all of our swimming pools across the county available free to all Wiltshire residents aged under 16 and over 60.
We live in a society where health issues relating to obesity are increasing due to the ever growing pressures on peoples time.
Providing a means of encouraging take-up of regular exercise at a young age will reap savings for many years to come.
Our Proposed AmendmentsWorking towards a Health Wiltshire for all£0.561m annually to re-introduce free swimming for under-16s and over-65s; As part of the Olympic preparations, and to meet Wiltshire Area Board commitments in the 2014 Leading by Example initiative. This investment emphasises the importance of health in a good quality of life in Wiltshire. |
Our increased funding will:
- Provide free swimming for all young people aged under 16
- Provide free swimming for all residents aged over 60
- Be available for Wiltshire residents only
- Take real action towards helping make Wiltshire one of the healthiest counties in the country
